Marilyn Hickey- a.k.a. sister Marilyn, Wally's wife

Major Crimes: Violation of God's divine order as stated in 1^st Timothy 2:12. Teaching false doctrines. The utterly shameless manipulation of God's people for financial gain.

Marilyn Hickey is the most prolific woman teacher within the Charismatic segment. She is probably one of the most highly respected of all Charismatic teachers. The only problem is she teaches things which simply are not true (which unfortunately is the bulk of Charismatic teaching).

Sister Hickey makes the Rogues Gallery because of her shameless fundraising appeal letters. She has obviously hired the same firm that used to send me appeals in the name of the Profit Robert Tilton. I have included a copy of the last three letters I received from her ministry, these are representative of what she sends out on a regular basis:

This letter came a few weeks later {I have the original in my files, but I wrote a personal letter for my genuine plastic replica of a widow's mite . . . to date I have not received my miracle mite :( }.

A Short Critque

The above fundraising appeals are shameless in nature. It is obvious that Marilyn Hickey Ministries is now using the same organization which sent out all of Robert Tilton's fundraising material. I'd love to know what the alpha/numeric codes stand for at the bottom of each letter.

The non-charismatic reader may have to refer to the charismania lingo page to understand some of her buzz words.

Note the shear manipulation in each letter -

(1) she prey's on the needs of hurting people by promising miracles. God never promised us miracles, it simply is not in the Bible. He works them still, but we have no "promise" to stand on for one.

(2) she always gives various mystical or magical steps for the giver to take. "Hold the cornmeal packet in your right hand. . ." Why not the left? What if I don't have a right hand?

(3) she pushes the false doctrine of "point-of-contact" which became a staple of Pentecostals during the healing revival of the 1940's. It is based on Paul's handkerchief miracle in Acts19:12. All we know is that Paul did this once and the Church is never given this as a means of healing or deliverance.

(4) she uses the "proxy" concept, i.e. you send me money and I will pray for whoever you want who is not saved and God will bless, save, heal, etc. them even though they are not His people. Tilton got into big time trouble pushing that lie! Proxy prayer is virtually indistinguishable from what the Roman Catholics did with indulgences.

(5) she always wants the donor to know that what she is doing in under the direction of the Holy Spirit and not a gimmick. Sure the little gram baggy of cornmeal may look like a gimmick, to hold it in ones right hand and pray outloud may seem gimmicky, but it is not! It is the direct will of God for you to do so!

(6) each letter has several places for you to give. I like the one which says the donation is to be used for the greatest need of the moment (like mansion payment, limo payment, Lear jet payment, etc.).

In short, each appeal is blatant manipulation of ignorant desperate people with legitimate needs. It is equally shameful that none of her fellow ministers have pulled her aside and exhorted her to stop using such tactics. She is one of the few that is as blatant in this form of manipulation, others are more subtle.

I advise all readers to contact her ministry and ask to be placed on her mailing list and thus you too can begin a collection of Marilyn Hickey Ministries non-gimmack trinkets. You will receive her newsletter and cost her ministry money! It is a win-win situation.

Apart from the usual Charismatic error she holds to a view of the rapture which is not generally held by other neo-Montanists.Sister Hickey teaches a two-tier rapture concept where the overcomers are raptured at the beginning of the tribulation and then three and a half years later the carnal believers are raptured. To be an overcomer is to be one who works hard to maintain their salvation and keeps their good deeds ahead of their bad ones . . . (Never loose sight of the fact that Pentecostal/Charismatic Christians are for the most part staunch Arminians in regards to their doctrine of salvation, in fact, many are pelagian in their views). The overcomer is the saint who lives a holy life, i.e. does not drink, swear, smoke, or chew, pays tithes off the gross, and is a 52 week attender at Church. Now many of these things are well and good, but they have no Scriptural bearing on whether one is raptured or not. When Jesus comes for His Church He is going to take all of His body with Him. Nothing in the Bible remotely suggests any believer will miss the rapture due to their sins or lack of sufficient good works. We will give an account of what we did and failed to do ( ) but we will all be taken at the same time.

Another unfortunate facet of her ministry is that she has her own Bible School, as did Robert Tilton, Kenneth Hagin, Oral Roberts, Jerry Savelle, Norval Hayes, Jimmy Swaggert, and Pat Robertson. From her school (and these others) a new generation of Word of Faith ministries is being grown, with more and more error and heresy. Remember heresy does not get better, it does not improve with age, like a fine wine. It continues to drift further and further into darkness. The only way heresy is stopped in the Church is by godly people standing up for the truth and being willing to swim upstream against what is popular. I pray you are I will be some of these people.
